Commute Music of the Week 3/7/2014-Macy Gray “I Try”

Normally, I have a certain aversion to “unrequited love/breakup songs”.   They make me want to shake the singer and say “Get on with your LIFE! Its not going to happen!”.

However, I really love this song.  Maybe its the lovely Nelson Riddle Orchestra-eque  intro, the slightly funky verses that surge into the chorus.   But I think its more the raw power of Macy Gray’s vocals that express the pain of loving someone who doesn’t love you back.   When I hear her sing this song, its a from the perspective of a very strong woman who is working through her emotions and letting them speak for themselves.  And there’s a feeling she is trying to get over all this sorrow, but isn’t quite there.   But I think she will in the end.

My point?  If you’re going to have a pity party about a breakup–this is a must for the play list.
